Athletes Village

Transport

Stratford already has great connections to the rest of London and further afield. There’s a well-developed network of public transport including buses, London Underground and other rail services.

Even so, the development of Stratford City and Athletes Village will lead to a big increase in the number of people moving around the area. So we’re planning to significantly improve rail, bus, cycle and pedestrian routes.

As part of the preparations for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, there are plans to upgrade and add to Stratford’s existing rail, bus, cycle and pedestrian connections. Many of these will still be in place after 2012, providing fast, reliable public transport for years to come.

By 2012, the brand new Channel Tunnel Rail Link station, Stratford International, will be open, with very fast links to Kings’ Cross St Pancras (seven minutes), Ebbsfleet (ten minutes) and mainland Europe, including Brussels (1 hour 44 minutes) and Paris (2 hours and 8 minutes). Docklands Light Railway will also be extended to Stratford International station.

The tube network will also be upgraded, with increased capacity at Stratford Regional Station and on the Jubilee Line, thanks to new signalling systems.

Buses

New bus routes to Hackney, Leyton, Stratford and the rest of the Lea Valley will make travelling across London, especially from east to west, much easier.

Cycling

New cycle routes will be created, linked to cycle paths being developed in the nearby Olympic parklands and the London Cycle Network. Cyclists living at Athletes Village will be able to reach all parts of the city, and visitors will be able to spend a day exploring the parks, shops, restaurants and other facilities that the area has to offer.

Pedestrians

There will be a network of new walkways connecting streets and green spaces. These will include routes along the cascading parklands of Athletes Village to the River Lea, and connections to the many other walkways around Athletes Village and Olympic Park.

Sustainability is important to Lend Lease and its partners, so the emphasis will be on helping people get around in an environmentally friendly way.

Roads & Parking

We will be improving roads too, upgrading existing junctions so the traffic runs smoothly in and around the area, and installing traffic calming measures. There’ll also be around 2,600 new parking spaces, including street parking, private parking for residents and offices and Blue Badge parking.

Additional parking provision will also be added for motorcycles, and options for resident car clubs are being explored.
