Athletes Village Update for June 2009
The story so far
Although construction got underway a year ago, it’s only now that things are really starting to get moving. Building work has started on eight of the 11 residential plots – you can already see three of these rising out of the ground. At two of the plots, we’re using something called ‘slip construction’, which means the lift shaft is built first. On these plots, the buildings have already reached their final height of between eight and 10 storeys. The third plot is being built differently, floor by floor. Now, almost 1,000 members of staff and contractors are based at the site, working in specially constructed, temporary accommodation blocks.
What’s happening now?
There are a number of developments happening now that you should know about.
New pedestrian access route
As of 1 June, there’s a new pedestrian access route to Athletes Village. You can access the new footpath via Leyton Road and it should now be the main route for everyone visiting the site on foot. This change should not affect neighbouring residents or local traffic.
North East Security Plaza
Most construction traffic is now entering the site through the North East Security Plaza off Temple Mills Lane, via a secure lane. Temple Mills Lane has been narrowed, and traffic lights installed, to make sure traffic keeps moving smoothly.
Leyton Road works
The contractor McNicholas is currently installing gas mains on Leyton Road, near the new pedestrian access. In the next few weeks, work will also get underway to improve Leyton Road. We expect this to take between six and nine months. These improvements will include new traffic lights, central islands and zebra crossings, and the road will also be widened in some places. Both vehicles and pedestrians will still be able to use the road while the work is carried out, and we’ll continue to keep you updated on progress.

Parking disruption
Although Newham has a controlled parking zone covering all roads bordering the Athletes Village and Olympic Park site, Waltham Forest doesn’t. We know that recent increases in parking requirements have caused problems for local residents. To ease congestion, we are reminding all our members of staff and contractors of the importance of travelling to work by public transport. We’re also working with the London Borough of Waltham Forest to explore the possibility of introducing controlled parking zones in specific areas between Leyton Road and Leytonstone High Roads.
Our commitment to you
Building Athletes Village is a big job and we know that, both during the construction stages and afterwards, it will have a big impact on the lives of people living or working near the site.
So we want to do everything possible to make sure the development is built safely and considerately. We’re also committed to keeping you informed about what’s happening, answering your questions and responding to your concerns as quickly as we can.
Bovis Lend Lease is a member of the Considerate Construction Scheme, a national initiative set up by the construction industry to reduce the disruption caused by big developments like Athletes Village.
