How to get work at Athletes Village
Lend Lease is working closely with our partners the London Borough of Newham and the Olympic Delivery Authority to make sure local people have access to jobs at Athletes Village.
Between now and 2012, there’ll be a variety of different jobs on offer, from professional occupations to general labouring work. These positions will start to become available from the middle of 2008, but there’ll be new opportunities coming up all the time over the next four years and beyond.
We’ve produced a document called the Stratford Charter, which sets out the main ways to get work at the development, and the help that’s available, whether you’ve worked in the construction industry before, have been out of work for a long time, or are still at school.
The best place to start is Workplace, a new one-stop shop for training, jobs and business support. Find out how to get in touch with Workplace in the Jobs and training contacts area of this section.
We’ve also launched a programme called Be Onsite, developed by Lend Lease’s project management and construction business Bovis Lend Lease.
Be Onsite offers job brokerage, supported employment and training, working with employers, training providers and other agencies to identify gaps in training provision. The aim is to fill those gaps, so industry gets the skills it needs and individuals get sustainable careers.
Find out how to get in touch with Be Onsite in the Jobs and training contacts area of his section.
Whatever your situation, we can help you get the skills, knowledge and experience that employers at Athletes Village are looking for.
Skilled workers
If you’re a skilled worker, with experience in the construction industry, we’ll help you find out what jobs are coming up, by publicising them through Workplace and with other specialised recruitment agencies.
Semi-skilled
If you’ve got some relevant skills, but not necessarily experience, we’ll provide information about jobs but also help with in-work training and careers advice.
Experienced
If you’ve worked in the construction industry but need to boost your skills, we’ll offer in-work and other training, as well as basic skills training (like literacy, numeracy and English for Speakers of Other Languages), careers advice and details of any suitable vacancies.
People with no site experience or relevant training
If you’ve had no site experience and have had some training but not in the areas required, we’ll organise work experience and in-work training, as well as offering careers advice and short courses with local colleges.
New to construction
If you’re completely new to construction we can offer training in specific skills, with courses tailored to the needs of employers. We’ll also provide apprenticeships, information on the construction industry and careers advice.
14 – 19s
If you’re aged 14 to 19, we’ll be working with schools and colleges to provide information on careers in construction, as well as offering apprenticeships, in-work and other training.
Under 25 and not in education, employment or training
If you’re under 25 and not in education, employment or training, we’ll help with basic skills training, mentoring, apprenticeships and on-site training.
Workless
If you’ve been out of work for a long time we can provide you with all the help you need, from basic skills training and mentoring to help with childcare and advice on benefits.
