Construction Programme

Construction

The team chosen by the Olympic Delivery Authority and London & Continental Railways to develop zones 2-7 of the Stratford City project, including Athletes Village, comprises – Lend Lease supported by Affordable Housing provider Triathlon.

Between us, we’ve got years of experience of working on large-scale construction and regeneration projects. Lend Lease is currently also the main development partner for the £1.5bn redevelopment of Elephant and Castle in the London Borough of Southwark.

At Athletes Village, Bovis Lend Lease, part of the Lend Lease group, will oversee all aspects of the project management and construction. Bovis Lend Lease also has a proven track record when it comes to delivering major projects, for example the Sapporo Dome in Japan, Time Warner Centre in New York and Bluewater shopping centre in Kent.

Throughout the construction phases of the project, we’ll work closely with our partners including the Olympic Delivery Authority and its Planning Decisions Team (PDT) which is the Planning Authority, and the London Borough of Newham.

Work on Phase 1 of the development – the construction of Athletes Village, including homes, shops, hotels, offices and community facilities – is due to start in mid-2008, with handover to the Olympic Delivery Authority scheduled for early 2012.

Phase 2, which involves the refurbishment of Athletes Village and the development of a further 500,000 square metres of space, including a major new commercial sector, will get started after the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. This phase is expected to be complete by 2020.

It’s a massive project. And while London’s successful Olympic bid has given it an extra buzz, that’s not our only focus. In fact, the level of overall investment in the development is so great that we’ll build more at Athletes Village after 2012 than we will before. With a substantial amount of demolition and other preparatory work already complete, construction work is on track to get underway in summer 2008.

Throughout the development, we will be guided by a set of principles including high standards of design and build as well as sustainability and safety. Read more about this in the ‘Our commitment to you’ part of this section.

We’re also committed to informing all our stakeholders, including local people, about what’s happening. But we want to go much further than that.

Only by getting local people closely involved in shaping the project can we be sure we’ll deliver the facilities and services that are right for the area. We’ve already consulted widely with people living nearby, and this work with communities will continue alongside the construction. Find out more in the Community section of this website.
